Thomas Ward, M.D.

Dr. Thomas Ward is a colorectal surgeon. He brought his services to University Health Alliance in 2024. Dr. Ward says his career path was driven by his love for science and the potential to use that knowledge to directly assist patients with colorectal issues.

Dr. Ward completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and a minor in religion, and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine.  He then completed his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. During residency, he completed a surgical artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation research fellowship, where he applied AI, machine learning, and computer vision to intra-operative video analysis. After residency, he trained at the Cleveland Clinic for its colorectal surgery fellowship.

Dr. Ward is an active member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is a peer-reviewed author, published in medical journals such as IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Surgical Endoscopy, Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, Colorectal Disease, IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, Journal of Surgical Oncology, Journal of Surgical Research, and others.

In his spare time, Dr. Ward enjoys cooking, reading, and Georgia football.
