University Health Alliance (UHA) announces the upcoming retirement of Dr. Gregory DeLaurier, a highly respected and board-certified colon and rectal surgeon, effective December 31, 2024. Dr. DeLaurier’s retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable career spanning over 30 years dedicated to the health and well-being of patients across the Athens community and beyond.

A Georgia native and a cornerstone of UHA’s colorectal care service line, Dr. DeLaurier joined UHA in 2023, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a legacy of compassionate, high-quality care. He has been instrumental in advancing colorectal surgical services, specializing in conditions such as diverticulitis, colon and rectal cancers, and polyps, and introducing innovative techniques like robotic and minimally invasive surgeries.

Dr. DeLaurier’s illustrious career began after earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, followed by an internship and residency at its affiliated hospitals. He further honed his expertise with a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Beyond his medical practice, Dr. DeLaurier served as a major in the United States Air Force, where he contributed to C4 combat casualty care training.

While it is bittersweet to step away from my practice, I am confident that my patients will continue to receive exceptional care from Dr. Fia Yi and Dr. Thomas Ward, two extraordinary surgeons who share my commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.”

As a peer-reviewed author and active member of numerous professional societies, he has contributed significantly to the field of colorectal surgery. His advocacy for early diagnosis and patient education has positively impacted countless lives, leaving a lasting impression on both his patients and colleagues.
